He woke up to the feeling of artificial light on his face. Though he might have preferred to sleep in, Snake instead sat up and went through his new routine, perfected through what was now months of being in this sterile, unwelcoming place. He brushed his teeth. He combed his hair the best he could, considering he didn't have a comb. And he made sure his clothes were, if not clean, at least unrumpled and presentable.
Some might ask him why he bothered to try and keep clean in a place like this -- no showers, no shampoo (unless you could pay for it, that is), and of course there was the fact that he was blind. To that Snake would respond politely, with only the faintest hint of disdain in his reply.
Of course it was important. Appearances were always important, even if you couldn't see. Because of course the others could see. And he would not fall behind or be lesser.
He heard footsteps approach, ran quickly through a list of the warehouse's current residents. It was a short list. "Hershel," he said, smiling. His manner was polite, but cool. There was always that distance. "You're up early."
*Snake was reading a magazine in the lounge because there was literally nothing else to do because the warehouse hated blind people. He had polite conversation with several people, although he made a special effort to needle characters like Kuzuryuu and Heiji because idk he got off on it. Maybe he'd try and pick a fight with Jake later. In any case for some reason his appearance was impeccable and nothing ever surprised him except every once in a while someone would ask him if he was a top or a bottom, like he even knew. He wanted some coffee. Clover.*
Now that his leg had improved somewhat, Sasuke had returned to sleeping where he felt most comfortable -- up in the branches of his favorite tree. It looked as though he was simply staring into space. He was near-motionless, barely appearing to breathe. And he was quiet.
Because he was so still, it was easily possible to overlook him. Which, for the most part, was what the other residents of the warehouse did. But he'd need to move soon, needed to at least show his face in the cafeteria. Otherwise the others would get worried.
And then there would be questions.
He hopped down, landing on the grass with both feet. Doing so hurt his leg, but the pain did not register on his face.
Now that Hershel had a moment to himself, he was going to allow himself to relax with his new best friend, the mint plant. He'd even persuaded Calhoun somehow to offer watering cans in the store so enjoy that picture, Hershel trying to work up the courage to ask for a little daisy watering can.
"There, now. Isn't that better?" he asked the mint plant, smiling a little as he gave it a bit to drink. "Why, you'll soon grow up to be a big fine specimen, won't you?"
He was quiet for a moment, looking around with his beady bird eyes to make sure no one else was around. No one was. Nevertheless, he put a hand in front of his face and whispered quietly.
"Don't tell anyone, but... Jake really is a good chap. What do you suppose he'd like as a present?"
"Blimey," Hershel continued. "You'll make a good spot of tea when you're fully-grown. I'll make some for that shitlord wanker relation of mine, bob's your uncle."
